"William Finley and Herman Bohlman climbed 150-foot trees, scaled cliffs, crawled through poison oak, and paddled on mosquito-infested lakes carrying heave camera gear in search of wild birds to photograph. Finley reasoned that it was better to take photographs of birds than to kill them. He worked for over 25 years to save the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Refuge in Eastern Oregon.

Finley also fought to clean up the Willamette River. He called dams "aquatic monsters" that doomed salmon.
Possibly every wildlife refuge in Oregon owes its existance to this man's struggle to provide sanctuaries to wild animals. "
